Its raining today
And again I left my hat on the kitchen counter

For the millionth time I'm not prepared for the unexpected

Each drop calmly walks from the tip of my thoughts to the souls of my loafers
But yet I look so ready
So expected of the unexpected
My collar is up
My hands are tucked deep in the pockets of my pea coat
My eyes are nearly closed to protect my pupils from being flooded
I strut through the sky's draining moment seeming to almost enjoy its drench
I want to lie to myself and say that the down pour doesn't effect me
But the puddles have begin to seep through my shoes
My socks have a slight dampness to them
Why did I wear these shoes
If I would had took 30 more seconds to check I could had grabbed my hat
I could had grabbed my umbrella
If I would had stop to think, then maybe…just maybe I would had put on thicker socks
But I….don't…stop…and…think
I rush, I make impulse decisions and grow confused and question why the consequences are so great
And if I can't understand the reasons then I find people to aim the tip of my fingers toward
Point…blame
So its just me and this rain and this mask
Pretending, as if I'm not upset from being soak
And the vomit of this gray cloud is all too familiar
The wetness…its outcome…its visit
Again I saw the storm inching towards me
But yet I fail to pay it any attention
Its raining today

Hello Bloggers, Facebook, Myspace, Ustream, Twitter, and every other online site. Put on your seat belts, take a deep breath and prepare yourself. This is "Cash Piss Off List!!"

Lets first discuss what this is about. Its just so many things that piss me off on a regular basis and I figured I would share some of them with you guys to see if its just me. Be careful reading this blog, you may be one of the people that piss me off. Who knows?

I think one thing I want to talk about is reality shows. From a business point view, I get it. Why pay working actors 100k an episode to act like idiots when you can hire real live idiots and pay them close to nothing? It makes perfect sense. However, calling them reality shows are just to much for me to take. One example is VH-1's Real Chance of Love. Come on people, why would 20 women compete for their love? Who are they? Then they get upset, (like all VH1's douche bags), when they find out the female is a recording artist, or actor, or model, or has been on another television show. WTF do you think these chicks are up there for in the first place!?! They want to get 15 minutes of fame, become a Z Lister, and maybe get pimped by having their own dumb ass show that VH-1 pays them nothing for. A chance to compete with 20 other women on a 1 hour sitcom and find true love. Are you fucking serious? The part that pisses me off the most is...I watch each and every episode!
Then there's Bravo's The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Its actually a great show. Its good television. The problem is, there's only one house wife on the whole damn show!! Kim has a sugar daddy. Lisa's husband is currently unemployed. Sheree is divorced. Candi is the sole provider of her home. Nee Nee is the only housewife out of them all. So its not the show that gets me, its the title. From here out the show is now called Four Chicks and a Housewife. Cool?
The last reality show I want to discuss is MTV's The Real World. I'm not just talking about the current season, but all of them with the exception of the first season and Real World Hawaii. The first season had seven young adults in a crappy apartment in New York somewhere. I was waiting for their lights to cut off, rats to eat through the floors and etc. That was as close to real that the Real World has ever been. The Hawaii season gets a pass only because of a roommate known as Tek. In my opinion, this guy was the realest roommate the Real World had ever cast. Each episode you saw him returning home that morning from the club and you saw him again later that night on his way to the club. He once said "what are we fighting for, we live rent free in a Hawaii mansion". How real is that?
Word of advice to MTV. How about casting some people from the real world to be on The Real World that people from the real world can relate to. Put Pookie and them on the show. Then add a few meth heads some rock n roll white boys and chronic weed smokers. While your at it you could add pregnancy some divorce some bad credit a few foreclosures and past due bills. You may want to come up with a better name, something catchy. Call it ahh....something like...Celebrity Rehab maybe. Anyways, moving right along.

My next topic is a short one but its been on my mind. What is up with Super Head screaming on talk show host. She's mad because they aren't respecting her as an author. She came out with a number one selling book that reveals the names of every superstar she slept with during her days as a video ho, sorry...I mean vixen. She stated that it was only so that upcoming video vixens wouldn't have to go through the pain and suffering she endured. Yet, she has done nothing to help them. She has started no agency to see that these females are treated fairly. She has no website telling them the proper ways to make it in this industry. Instead, she has made a second book about Karma Sutra. This book explains to females the best way to please a man sexually. Hmmm?....And she tells the media she doesn't want to be known for her past. A doctor uses his experience and teachings to cure people. A ho uses her experinces to do what? Exactly. Enough said.

Let's see, what else is pissing me off right now? I got it! Music videos have officially made it to Cash's Pissed Off List. Its bad enough that people think saying two words that rhyme makes you a rapper or autone can somehow magically turned you into a singer. I mean the music industry is not the place to look if your searching for talent. To make matters worse, its been years since I have seen a hip hop video that actually had something to do with the damn song! Every video is exactly the same. The ingredients are as followed:
-ass
-cars
-jewelery
-cash
-clubs
-bottles of liquor
Have these items not been seen in every video for the past decade? Would it make sense to do something new? If your song is about a lady losing her child, then what the hell do you need these props for? Please...I'm begging you...just give me one video that makes sense. Just one!!
T.L.C. had a hit titled "Waterfalls". In the video they where near a waterfall. It had a story line for each verse. It was entertaining. If that video was created today then the director would have them in the club with gold chains on drinking champagne with a car parked on the dance floor sitting on money while wearing bikinis. Damn!!

Alright people, I think I've said enough. The next time that I'm pissed off I'll let you know. I hope its not just me that has noticed this bullshit. Till next time,...see you online somewhere.

DO YOU NEED A RECORD DEAL?

As always, I want to thank my readers for the support they have been showing for each and everyone of the blog post. To those who keep up with the "What you need to know about the music industry series", thank you for your questions. I hope the blogs are of use to you. I'm currently working on a series of blog post that will be for upcoming producers that will consist of several know producers, with the legendary "Billy Hume" being one of them.

The inspiration of today's blog came from question that was recently asked by one of our readers. The question was "am I wasting my time attempting to get a record deal". First lets take a look at what revolves around this question. On one end its people that say a record deal in this day and time is a waste. That its no need to have a record deal being that they will rape you for your commissions. Others are killing themselves to get a record deal. My opinion is this. Its no such thing as a good or bad record deal. A record deal is nothing more than sheets of paper. What matters is what's written on these sheets. And how do you determine what's written on the sheets...by negotiating. Contracts are contracts, its the negotiating that's either good or bad.

Lets take buying a car for example. You walk into the car dealer ship and there is a clean 2009 Lex going for 25k. The car dealer says to you "the car has every feature you asked for, the only problem is the transmission is shot". You decide to buy the Lex for all the features but get upset with the amount you have to spend on maintenance being that you just spent 25k to purchase this vehicle. Who's fault is this, yours or the car dealer? Exactly. You can't be upset with the car dealer. He did his job. He made profit off a car that no one else in the lot could sell. He waited for you. He knew that someone would come along and buy this car because it was a Lexus, regardless of the problems they may have with you. You can't blame anyone but yourself. Does that make sense?

Don't follow others. Its several things that you should be doing on your own before you even consider having a record deal. Most likely you can't achieve global or national exposure. If you could then this blog would not be of interest to you. The fact that you can't gain that exposure isn't a bad thing. This is what I'm saying. Allow yourself a 10 mile radius. Do everything in your power to control and lock down that 10 mile radius. Let that be your national or global market. Operate the same way that a record label would only on a smaller scale. Promote, network, do everything. Use the Internet to go outside of that radius, but that 10 miles should be where your profit comes from. As your profit increases, so should your radius. Follow me, its a method to my madness.

Now a record label is nothing more than a loan. Once you receive this deal you go in debit that day! The label is going to do less than a third of what they can do to make profit. They will spend 2 dollars to make 20, which makes perfect sense. What matters is what you walk in the door with. What can you offer the label other than talent? Talent is good, but keep in mind that its only a small portion of your product. There still has be a team to develop your image. Its another team that has to promote you. Along with that team is a team that has to figure out which market will be the most profitable for your product. Its the production of the product which accumulates another expense. So if you walk in the door with nothing, your asking this label to do everything. To make you a huge star and give you all the profits in return. Tell me one business that operates that way.

Its about what you walk in that door with. You have to exhaust every possible avenue before even getting a deal. I mean, you can get one before that but just know the outcome. So back to the question "do you need a record deal". If you can't gain national or global exposure to sell your product, then hell yes you need a deal. But labels are like any other corporate company. They want to put money in, not do work, and wait for the return. Back to the 10 mile radius. Now once you make enough noise trust me the labels will find you. By then your radius may have increased to 100 miles, if so then your profit has increased. You have proven to the labels that you can make profit off your product. You can negotiate now. You don't need them to create you. You have a fan base, your simply asking them to allow you the opportunity to use their tools and resources to increase your market...or radius. In return your willing to give them a percentage of the profits. How small or how large that percentage is depends on you.

So in closing, a record deal isn't bad. You just have to ask yourself a one thing before getting a record deal. Other than talent, what can you offer a label? You shouldn't be looking for a label to get you the success that you deserve. You shouldn't be searching for a record deal. Instead you should be looking for a business partner. That's what the label should be. Nothing more than a business partner who is providing you with the proper resources and tools to increase the profit or fan base that you already have. If you haven't conquered, or begin to conquer your 10 mile radius, then you have no power for negotiation. None!! And if you sign a record deal at this point you can only expect to get what they are willing to give, which is close to nothing. You just brought a beautiful Lexus with a horrible transmission.

WHAT HAPPEN TO HIP HOP??

What happen to hip hop? Did it die? Did it change? Was it reborn? What happen? In my opinion hip hop has went from a culture to a business. It has provided the unfortunate with success. Hip hop has went from an exciting battle of words in the park to an empire that provides for thousands. Did it die? HELL NO! Is it the hip hop we once knew? Again,...HELL NO!!

Hip hop was once a culture. It was how you dress. It was the way you spoke, the way you act. It was our way of life. To me that sense of culture has become a blur. Most artist have failed to be themselves, and instead comprise who they are for a hit record. I don't agree with the theory, but I do understand it. At the end of the day this is a business. Every business thrives off one thing and one thing only, "PROFIT". Even a non-profit organization has to generate some source of income to maintain its stability. So in that aspect the theory makes perfect sense, but what does it do to the culture of hip hop? And that, well that's where the change takes place.

Before I went to LA I had an idea of what it was like. I had a visual image of New York before I placed my feet on its concrete. Years before I relocated to Atlanta I was educated on the East, West, North, and Southside of the city. I saw candy paint and knew what "drank" was in Texas without being there. From each coast, each state, these artist made you feel as if you were there living the experience. You heard the passion in their voices. And their lyrics told a story that captured your attention. Today that feeling comes every so often.

Instead, so many artist have subject themselves to chasing the next hit. We have grown to expect nothing new from the majority of today's modern hip hop. If its not how much dope or money one has, its a new dance. If its not jewelery its hoes. Or, after millions of albums sold its a story of an artist screaming how he's still in the hood doing the same thing he been doing. HOW??? WHY?? YOU RICH, WTF YOU IN THE HOOD FOR?? Now again, as much as I hate to say it,... I don't agree but I understand. This is the business of selling records.

So what happen to hip hop....it evolved. It did exactly we wanted it to do. It expanded beyond its project buildings or ghetto slums and found its seat in corporate America. It found its way to fast food commercials, stadium seats, ipods, and pop charts. It evolved into our biggest dreams, a global empire. And its only passion and drive is to continue the sell albums at any cost.

And it wasn't the east coast, southeast, west coast, mid west, or dirty south that killed hip hop. Hip hop has yet to die. Its actually alive and well. It just made a business decision. It exchanged its culture for success and wealth. The question is......was it wrong, or what is right? Or better yet,...what do you think happen to hip hop? FEEL FREE TO RESPOND.

It was reported that Benaissa neglected to inform her partner that she was HIV positive. If found guilty of the charges of "causing grievous bodily harm," Benaissa could face up to 10 years in prison.

THE "WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY SERIES" PART 7

WHAT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THOUSANDS TO INVEST? WHAT IF YOU ARE JUST A LOCAL ARTIST TRYING TO MAKE IT? WHAT DO YOU DO?

Before I start this blog, I want to say thank you to all the readers and viewers of this and all the blog series of "Marv & Cash Chatline". The responses to the blogs have been overwhelming. Your comments, messages,questions, have all been more than appreciated. Again thank you.

Today's topic is one that I think several of my readers can relate to. I want to address where the local independent artist should invest their budget. When I say budget, I'm not talking about those with 50 or 60k to spend on their project. Although there is a blog I will be releasing for you guys. Instead I'm referring to those who are using the extra 100 or 200 dollars they made from the overtime at work last week.

This blog is about knowing what to invest your money into. The first rule is to observe every situation. For example, music seminars. If a seminar does not apply to how you can improve your situation then don't attend!! What good will it do you to know what equipment needed to make new beats if you are an artist only? You understand? Now don't get me wrong, there are some great music seminars to attend that provide lots of valuable information. One is your local Recording Academy Chapter Meetings. They provide information that pertains to the current state of the music industry and what you need to do secure and protect your product. The information provided comes from a panel of people that have help sculpt and mold this industry and its progress. GREAT INFORMATION!!

Lets move on to performances. This can be good and bad. Most local artist can only use open mic venues to showcase their talent. All open mics aren't bad, some are great choices. Others may not be so good. Again, you have to look into these things. Break them down and see how much of a benefit it is to you. It normally cost about 10bucks as a cover charge and anywhere from 10 to 25 dollars as a performance fee. Lets say on average your looking at 25 dollars per performance. In a months time if your grinding 5 days a week your spending an estimate of 500 per month. That's not including drinks, gas, drinks, more drinks, drinks, and some more drinks..lol. Within a year of doing this, who has benefit more...you...or the promoters your spending with every night? Exactly.

Now I'm not knocking anyone's hustle, get your money by all means. But as an artist it so much more you can do with 500 dollars a month. Not even that much. For example instead of paying that 25 bucks to perform you may be better off buying a drink or two for the DJ and building a relationship with him. You won't perform that night, but you can have the DJ talk about your product and where to get it. Even better he may showcase your song a few times between performances. And if you do decide to perform at the event be sure that your performance is different from your peers. Not just in the performance itself. Instead pull the promoter to the side and pay little bit more for your performance that night. Don't compete, instead have them announce you or your group as the special performance for that night. Look important. And after your performance have a few females in the crowd collecting email address and handing your product out for free. This gives a much more powerful impact then being #3 on the list. Don't do it every night. Don't do it every week, but when you do it make sure that your presence is felt. Use the open mics to build relationships, to record and document your story, to build an email data base.

Next is local magazine advertisement. This is your press. It's not a bad thing. The key to it is how you invest your dollars. What you spend should make an impact to your fans and the magazine's viewers. Now if you have the money for XXL, Ozone, The Source, King, then just having your face in the mag is an impact. But if its local press why not pay a few bucks more...write up a great bio...and pay for a full page. Make it look like an interview, as if your just as important as those they have choose to interview. I would do this once every few months, instead of paying 100 bucks every month to share your page with 6 other adds or artist.

Next is all these quick profit organizations that claim they can get you a record deal. I haven't seen one yet. Not saying its not any out there, I just haven't seen them. Look, if you make enough noise then someone will hear you. You think Jeezy paid some organization 300 a month to get a deal? Nah, he sold 250,000 mixtapes and the labels noticed. Soljah Boy exploded on the Internet and Coli Park found him. As the saying goes "if you build it, they will come". Your money can go somewhere a lot more useful ya dig.

Last is an album. I'm not saying don't let that be your goal. I just think you should concentrate on completing one song first. That doesn't mean recording it at your boy crib. That means getting the song mix and mastered properly at a professional studio. That means having the song copy written. You will spend just as much recording 18 songs on a mixtape or album, that you may not sell. That one song is what your going to use to drive your traffic. That traffic turns to a fan base. The same fan base that would be willing to pay and come see your performance. And that will finance your album.

I know I started part 5 that way, but it just sounds so cool ya dig, plus it sets the tone for this blog. I know on part 5 we spoke about branding. I was suppose to talk about how to get your brand out. Well that isn't the exact topic, however the information can be applied to that.

The Internet has by far been one of the most bittersweet inventions of our time. To have the ability to transfer information from one place to the next in a matter of seconds is amazing. The Internet has been the source of information. There is nothing you can't find. INCLUDING FREE MUSIC AND VIDEO.

The horrible part of the Internet is just that. Its no information that you are not unable to obtain. This has nearly destroyed the music industry. Album sales haven't been this low in years, decades even.

Through all the turmoil, its not as bad as it seems. At one point in time you became someone in the music industry when you were untouchable. Your appearance was as big as a UFO sighting. Today that rule doesn't apply. Your fans need to know you on a personal basis, and the Internet is the best way to do it.

Its so many ways to reach your friends but the most popular are the following:

Each of these sites allow your fans to contact and talk to you personally. The first thing that you need to understand is that nobody is a fan. Instead they are friends. They expect to be treated as one. Reply to those who contact you. Depending on how many friends you have this may not be possible, and if not then let it be known. Post a bulletin letting them know how you feel and that you will respond the moment you can. Don't just leave them waiting, keep them in the loop.

My favorite has been Twitter. It gives me the opportunity to inform my fans of exactly what I'm doing at that very moment. Now to all my independent or upcoming artist, there is one thing I want to say. STOP KILLING YOURSELF TRYING TO GET THE CELEBS TO NOTICE OR BECOME YOUR FOLLOWERS!!! Concentrate on the consumers, those are the followers you want. Trust me, if you get thousands of followers the celebs will follow. Why? Because they want to know what you are doing so that they can be a part of it. And besides, they are your competition. How much help do you think they will give to you honestly?

The next is blogging. BLOG!! BLOG!! BLOG!! I can't stress that enough. This is your way of giving your fans, I'm sorry...friends, exactly what's on your mind. What subject to blog on, who cares just do it. Look at it as having a phone conversation. Half the time when you dial a number you have no idea what you are going to talk about, but when you hang up you've discuss 10 different topics by the time you hang up. Treat blogging the same. Inform you friends of what's on your mind.

If you don't have a youtube channel then something is wrong. Most artist want to be on TV. Well, this is your chance. Youtube is your own personal broadcasting network. What type of TV shows have dominated the past 10 years? Reality shows!! People love real life. Even better, people love real life that they can relate to. Give the world your story. Show them what you go through.

Facebook and Myspace go without saying. These are two of the largest social networks there are. Facebook is just reassuring those who know you what to look for or what to expect from you. Myspace is your own web page, demo, or whatever you want to call it. Have these friends visit your page. Keep them coming. A&R's no longer go through a pile of demos for the next hot thing. They go to Myspace. Let me break it down, its simple.

Millions of Myspace plays + Thousands of Twitter Followers + Hundreds of Youtube views = GOOD INVESTMENT

The key to the process is just as simple. Tie each of these in together and communicate with as many as your friends as possible, on a personal level. Aight that's it for tonight. INTERNET KILLED THE ROCKSTAR. I thought it would be cool to start this blog off with that. The reason I choose the that title is because the first video to air on MTV was "Video Killed The Radio Star", by the British synthpop gruoup The Buggles. MTV was launched on August 1 1981, and that video made a statement that day. The statement was that it was a new era on the horizon. Things had begin to change.

As you know my blogs tend to ramble. So I suggest that you continue to read and everything will fall in place, now back to MTV. Before MTV you enjoyed your favorite artist by listening to them either on the radio or a good old cassette tape. MTV gave you the chance to see the emotion of songs. Artist began to create mini movies that explained their songs from start to end. As consumers, we grew to love it. It was perfect. And it didn't destroy radio, but it did put a dent in their pockets. It changed the way we viewed music.

The Internet has began to do the same thing. It has given us the ability to not only get music when we want it, but it has also given us the ability to personally know the artist we choose to be a fan to. We can track their every movement. We can obtain their music the second its recorded. We can see on twitter what they are doing at that very moment. We have been given the opportunity to welcome our consumers to join our everyday lives. This leads me to my current topic...BRANDING.

ARTIST ARE NOW EXTINCT!! The only thing left are brands. For example, the Nike brand. People trust in that little white check mark that's on the side of air force ones. We are willing to pay an extra 30 bucks for a solid shirt that has a Ralph Lauren Polo logo on it. If you close your eyes right now and say out loud "fast food" I guarantee the image in your mind will be either the McDonald's or burger king logo. You trust in these brands for the service they provide.

A close friend of mine by the name Heataman use to say to me "when it comes to chics, I don't really have game they just understand my story." That's branding. Once you have your product established the next step is telling the story behind the product. Allow your consumers to see the hard work it took to create what you are giving them. Give them the chance to respect your work just as much as you do. Use youtube as your own personal TV network. Show them the not only the success, but the disappointments the hard work the struggles, everything that was involved in making the product you are giving them. The best example I can give you is Day 26. We watch them go from a group of guys fighting for a spot on Bad Boy to becoming superstars. You not only purchased the album because you love the music, but because you were so happy for them. As Heataman would say...you understood their story.

Now along with branding yourself you have to ask "what will my brand stand for" this will determine what your consumers think of you. Whether its you being down to earth, or this cocky arrogant artist that feels the world should praise him/her, whatever it is that's what you need to be all the time. Everything about you needs to be a representation of that brand. For example you don't go to McDonald's for a five star meal do you? Of course you don't. You go there to get a bite to eat for cheap. And everything they do represents that. The dollar menu, a full combo meal for under 6 bucks, the drive through. That logo represents cheap, convenient, food. Therefore everything they do has to represent that. If McDonald's begin selling their combos for 80 bucks a plate they would go out of business the next day because that's not what they represent. That's not the brand they have created.

Make sure that your the expert for the service your brand provides. Your consumers depend on your expertise. When they see your logo or anything your brand may be affiliated with they expect one of two things. 1) A service or product even better than the last that they purchased from you or 2) to be taught to do what you do just as good. You have to be perfect at what you do, at what your brand stands for. There is no room for error. Here is an example. Lets say that your sick, extremely ill. Would you rather go to a doctor that has not only studied but mastered your illness and its cure? Or would you rather visit a doctor that knows little about the sickness you have and only makes an assumption of what the cure may be? My point exactly.

Now once your brand and its service is established, the next step is getting it to your consumers. Unfortunately its 6:15am and its becoming very difficult to keep my eyes open. Everyday I receive an email from Bob Lefsetz discussing the music
industry's changes, mistakes, and etc. Today the email i got from him
spoke on the book "Tribes" by Seth Godin. I haven't purchased the
book as of yet, but I am aware of it. From my understanding it gives
an example of building your own tribe of followers. The procedures are
said to be the exact method of expanding a fan base.
Bob goes on to explain how artist should not only create fans but a
relationship with them as well. An example of that is singer /
songwriter Cory Smith. In one of the previous blogs I discussed with
you how there are some artist who never made it to radio but are just
as successful as those who are in regular rotation. Cory Smith is one
of those artist. He has accomplished this by building his fan base one
fan at a time.
Billy Hume said to me that Cory communicates with his fans through
email and actually gives to them free music if they ask for it. To
some this unheard of...WHAT!! FREE MUSIC!!...But it actually makes
perfect sense. He gives a fan a few free downloads of his music. In
exchange they pay $10 bucks to come see him perform, not including the
$10 bucks spent by the friend that came with them to the performance .
After the show they buy a $10 T-shirt before they leave. When they
wake up the next morning they go to itunes and buy the three tracks
they heard him perform. So in the end he gives away 3 downloads that
may have cost what $3 bucks in total, but profit at least $20
something bucks. Now if his show is a sold out event, which it usually
is, image about 1 or 2 thousand people doing this. How is it done? By
not just building fans, but relationships with your fans.
Okay story time. I met with Jim Jones in Houston at club Dipset once.
He also recorded at this studio I use to have in Norfolk, Va. On both
occasions the guy was real down to earth. Cool guy. To be honest, he
probably wouldn't remember me from a can of paint and that's cool. Now
I'm not the biggest fan of his music, but would I support it? HELL
YES!!! Why? Because he was a real stand up guy on both times we met.
Cool as shit.
Now its another guy, I won't mention his name. But he had a big hit,
huge hit that made him successful actually, he was also sign to
Rocafella at the time and I had the chance of meeting him in
California at the BET music awards. I said to him "from one artist to
another I want to thank you for making the song --------- hip hop
really needed that." He looks at me and says "whatever man." Do I like
his music? LOVE IT!! Do I support his music? HELL NO!!!
The point in the two stories is that people want to feel like friends
and not fans. Fans are people that buy your music and if they don't
hear from you then after a while they forget about you. Friends look
for you when they don't hear from. They ask other people "hey have you
heard from so and so." How do you make friends, by building
relationships. You have to communicate with your audience.
One thing Bob mentioned in his email was giving your audience
everything they don't want. Forcing down their throats music they
don't want to hear. Instead of sending free music to your fan base why
not try a different approach. Why not send a mass email out saying
"hey I just worked on a new song I would love you guys to hear and
tell me what you think. Is it cool to email you the mp3? Email me back
once you get this." May work may not, but the point is making your
fans feel as if your giving them what they ask for.
Another thing is the distance. In the Recording Academy meeting I
attended, a question about reaching fans overseas was asked. A
speaker on the panel from SESAC responded by saying "if you get a
fan base in Japan, how are you going to get there?"
Most of us don't have the income to travel overseas on a regular
basis. You should concentrate on everything within a 2 hour drive from
you. That's your area, your region. Every city, hood, club, radio
station, college, mom and pop store, within a 2 hour drive of where
you are. This way when you build that relationship with your fans you
can say to them personally "hey I'm performing at club ---- make sure
you come to the event". You need to be able to reach your fans and
they need to reach you. Its just like being with a girl. Most long
distance relationships don't work. Most females want QT, and you can't
give that if your a coast away ya dig.

The "What You Need To Know About The Music Industr y" Part 3

Today's topic I want to try and keep a little short. Today we are going to talk about getting your music out there. This blog is for not only artist but indie lables as well. So lets begin why don't we.
While in the Academy Meeting there had been a discussion about getting your music out. The question ask was "how do you get your music to radio when you have the big wigs paying for airtime?". It was a great question and the answer was something I had been saying for a while now....*uck radio!
Yes, having your song played on the radio is a great thing. Yes, it does promote to your consumers. Now the question is, how many of your consumers actually listen to the radio? When is the last time you spent over 15 minutes listening to the radio? Exactly!
Now its so many people who pay the radio disc jockey to spin their music, to me its wasted money. Your playing a song that isn't register through sound scan which mean you aren't getting paid for it spinning. Its not going to be in rotation so how much promotion did you really get? Its worthless. I don't want to say *uck radio, but *uck paying the DJs to spin your music. The reason I say that is simple. The DJ has no control of what gets regular rotation at that station. No matter how much you pay them, they could never give you an exact number of how long or how many spins you will get. That's controled by the Program Director. Even then, you have to break it down further.
This is how the radio operates. Their profit is made off of advertisement. Therefore they advertise a product during the times that most of the listeners are tuned in to that station, this is refered to as peak hours. Those peak hours are created by giving the listeners what they would rather hear, and that determines what songs go in rotation. Those songs are used to drive traffic which creates peak hours which determines how much an advertiser pays for their commerical to be played during that time. The question is, how much traffic would your song create? From the radio's perspective, what sense would it make to put your song in rotation if it has no fan base behind it? For example, how much profit would you make from a club performance that you haven't promoted for? My point exactly.
Instead of spending your money on radio, invest into club DJs and your core audience. Spend money in the clubs your listeners go to. That should be your radio. Its not the radio personality that determines what plays on the radio station, nor is it the program director to be honest. You know who it is? Its that female who leaves from the bar to the dance floor when your song is playing yelling "girl that's my shit right there!" That's who determines what gets played on the radio station. Those are the radio's customers. The radio has to give their customers the music they want. Its a cycle. The club owner wants his club packed so he picks the best DJ to do such. The Dj knows the club owner is depending on him to keep people moving so he has to play what packs the floor. Therefore you should be providing the DJ with what song he should play. Once your hot in the streets and the club, the radio is forced to put you in rotation because your song is what their customers want.
Invest your money and time into creating a fan base, radio will come. Its people who sell out venues that don't have anything playing on the radio. This is not the 80's people. Its a new time and a new day. Be smart about where your money goes. Stop trying to make albums....breath...and come up with one hot song. Get it mix and mastered then hit the street one person at a time. Collect email addresses, myspace pages, facebook accounts, and start pushing that one song. Go to the hottest strip clubs find the hottest dancers in there and make their performance tapes for them with all the songs they loves to dance to and include your single on their individual show tape. Throw each dancer a few extra bucks for dancing to your song, then buy the DJ a bottle and get his contact info so he can spin your same song for you at every club he's at. Put your track on itunes and wait for radio to catch on.
Now if you still thinks its in your best interest to pay radio then do it this way. Don't pay the morning show DJ or the afternoon rush hour DJ to play your song. Here's a better idea. Pay for a commerical to run during peak hours. On that commerical have a snippet of your song playing. At the end of this snippet provide your myspace page address or whatever website that your consumers can purchase your song. This way you know exactly how long and how many times your consumers will be hearing your song and its being promoted properly.

I know its been a while but I'm back. I saw Cash was keeping you guys educated on the music industry. With that said I took it upon myself to have my top 5 of this week something interesting. Something that will keep my readers in tune. So this week's top will be "The Top 5 People Of The Week That Can Kiss My Ass!"

-5. The first K.M.A. goes to youtube's number one idiot, The Aids / Trashman. For those who don't know this guy, let me tell you who he is. He's some dude who claims to have attentionly infected over 1200 females with H.I.V. He then proceeded to read several of their names out on a youtube video. He was recently arrested for making a youtube video that stated he and other employees of Gerber had posioned thousands of jars of baby food. Hopefully they will put him in a cell with the crazy 450 lb brother of one of the female names he called out. So to The Aids / Trashman....KISS MY ASS!!!

-4) The second K.M.A. goes to blogger Sandra Rose. I mean this chick is just stupid. To me she spends to much time trashing Obama. She's a black republican, which I have no problem with. Its just she will see a photo of Obama shaking a female's hand then scream that he's cheating. She's an idiot. I mean, its the first black president beotch!! So to Sandra Rose....KISS MY ASS!!!

-3). The third K.M.A. goes to everyone who has nothing to do with but wants to a part of the whole Chris and Rhianna thing. Now look, if Chris beat homegirl then yes its a problem and he wrong for that. Its no excuse for it period! The "What You Need To Know About The Music Industry" Series 2

Okay where did we leave off? I think it was telling the consumers your story right? Well that's the most important thing you can do at this point. That goes for artist as well as labels who manage the direction of their artist. The consumers of music no longer purchase the music for its quailty, but for the interest of the artist. What is it that you knew about 50 cent before he became mainstream? You knew the exact amount of times he was shot. What was it that you knew about Eminem before he became mainstream? You knew how much he hated his mom. What was it that you knew about DMX before he became mainstream? He did and still does have serious problems with the law and a dramatic past. Soljah Boy? His internet success was his story. The point that I'm making is that the story sold them. You must have a story. It may not be interesting to you but the public may love it. Nas once said, and I quote "they love to hear the story how the thugs live and worry..." and he was oh so true.
This is where the infamous 360 deals take place. The topic had been brought up during the Chapter meeting of the Recording Academy. I for one felt as if this was the worse deal that an artist could possibly take, till it was broken down for me. Again, I have stressed how important it is to build, expose, and sell your story. This has now become the priority of the label, management, and even the producer in some cases.
Now lets go off course for a moment. This is what a 360 deal does. This recording contract basically allows the lable to take a portion of all your commisions. Your tour money, merchandise profits, masters, copyrights, all play a part in paying back the lable. For an artist this deal can be a bad or good thing. For example, if a producer works with an artist on spect ( which means no up front money) they have agreed to manage the course of the artist. The sound, the image, and etc. Being that the artist has not given the producer money up front in all fairness they should be allowed a larger percentage of the masters and copyrights to compensate for their work. This is what the label's obligation is if you have been signed to a 360 deal. The reason for it is because labels have mainly depended on album sales to compensate their expenses. If they have invested thousands or millions into a project then the profit of album sales will not cover the expense made. Album sales are horrible right now. As I stated in the previous blog, albums have become nothing more than a marketing tool instead of revenue. So in all fairness a 360 deal makes perfect sense....if its done by the book.
Now this is where that same deal gets bad. Since the birth of successful indie lables, the majors have somewhat grown lazy. Its been great for them. All they have to do is provide additional promotion to a regional artist or lable. This allows them to take that same level of sucess from regional to worldwide. The problem comes in when the majors choose to not hold up their end of the deal but want to enjoy the sucess of the situation. Meaning "you do all the work and I will sit back. When the profit comes back, I want a percentage of everything you work for." That my friend is when it make no sense to sign a 360 deal. Everyone must play their part in order for the machine to work properly.
Now that's one reason a 360 deal can be bad. If done right, then it makes sense for an upcoming artist to sign a 360 deal. Now when it comes to an establish artist, it make no sense. The purpose is to sell your story. To make the public so interested in you that your name becomes a brand. For example, I can buy a shirt from Target for 12 bucks right? Now if put on the tag of that same shirt Sean John, the retail value tripples. Why? Because of the branded name attached to it. Now if a name is already that powerful, what brand is the lable attempting to build? How much more of a story does 50 Cent, Snoop, Jay-Z, U2, Aerosmith, or The Rolling Stones need? My point exactly. It doesn't make sense for them to sign a 360 deal. They would be better off going independent and supplying their fanbase through the internet. The majors didn't deserve a portion of their outside profits then so they don't deserve it now.
Sometimes this may not be the best choice for indie labels either. If you have the ablility to slowly build your fanbase one person at a time then do that. This process may take much longer, but it can be done. You may sell less and your venues may be smaller than that of an established artist, but you keep all your profits. Your advance may be smaller, but so what. Now if you don't have the means or income to maintain shows or promotions then a 360 deal may be best. Just look at like this. Lets say we work together as door to door salesmen. Now you had nothing but the ablility to talk a good game and get our product sold. So I tell you "look I'm going to buy you some suits to make you look more professional. I'm also going to allow you to sell in the neighborhoods I normally sell in since I can't go there as much as I would like to. I'm going to pick you up everyday for work. And last I'm going to put your name on my business cards as an alternate contact to get you more clientel. Now because I'm doing this I want 20% of every sale you make and 20% of every sale made by anyone you bring in." Good old fair deal. Now lets say it the same secnario. Only this time I say "the only thing I'm going to do is explain the product to you and how it works, that's it nothing more. I also want you to sell in the neighborhoods I normally sell at, as well as new neighborhoods you may find. Along with that I want 20% of everything you sell and 20% of every sell made by those you bring in." Fucked up deal right.

Today is what I like to call an informative blog. This blog is for anyone in the music profession. I recently done a blog that was pertaining to New School Hip Hop VS Old School Hip Hop, which I received several comments on from various online communities and blogsites. Those responses have led me to the blog I bring you now.
Today I attended the Recording Academy Atlanta Chapter seminar as an invited guest with producer / songwriter Billy Hume. It was various topics that were discuss but the two that struck the most interest and attention were 360 deals and the current direction of music as a whole.
First of all I was surprised to know the amount of sold units that are required to reach billboard’s top 200. At one point in time the amount was an estimated 10,000 units. With record sales being as low as they are the required amount is now 2500 units. That should give you an idea of where music is at this point. The question is not what do we do to improve it, but what do we do as professionals in this industry to maintain our careers?
To me this is a one of the defining moments of the music industry. It is a change in what we all are use to. My former manager said to me once “there is nothing new under the sun,” and he’s right. Music has been here before, in the eyes of change. For example, New York artist single handedly control the hip hop industry for years. No disrespect to New York, but during this time it was nearly impossible for southern hop hop artist to be heard or given recording deals. So they begin to distribute their own albums from the trunk of their cars, to the local neighborhoods, local disc jockeys, and clubs. That determination and grind was the birth of independent artist and label deals. These guys changed how the music industry had been accustom to doing business for years.
Here is another example. At one point albums were recorded and distributed on cassette tapes. Later on came the compact disc that we are all accustom to. It was a change. This change caused an uproar. It was a matter of not knowing the estimated amount of tapes or compact disc to manufacture. The expenses could effect both the label and distributor if not executed properly. In the end it served to be a large profit margin for old recordings. Labels were now able to double the money per unit. They had sold thousands of cassettes, but consumers were now using CD players in their homes and cars making cassette players a thing of the past. This allowed them to re-release albums dated as far back as 30 years and now sell the units double the price. Horrible for the consumer, but a plus for the music industry. It was a change. A change that effect the industry, but worked out for the best. What we are going through now is a change, but again “there is nothing new under the sun.”
From what was discuss at the Recording Academy chapter meeting, the majors are buying into the story of the artist. They want to see the work, the accomplishments, the numbers. They also stated that with album sales being as low as they are an album has become nothing more than a marketing tool. To break it down more for you, its extra money!! The artist has to do more than make good music. The money is now in touring, endorsements, song placement, and other new media. This gives everyone work to do. Everyone involved has to play their part in order for the machine to work properly.
As an artist you need viral videos, a page on every online community, blogs, your own social network and etc. You need to be on a one on one bases with your fans by emailing them personally giving them a way to contact you, keeping them informed. You need those fans at your shows and the goal is to have them bring at least two friends to your next show. You get what I’m saying?
Two examples I give to you are Paris Hilton and Soljah Boy Tell Em. I’m not the biggest fan of either. However they both fit the point that is made. Lets start with Soljah Boy. He’s the king of the internet. All I can say is whatever he is doing is working and is the model we all should be following whether you enjoy his music or not.
Paris Hilton,…let me ask you…what does she do? I mean we all know who she is, but what does she do as a profession? My point exactly. You know her. And the fact that she has become so interesting to the public it allows her the ability to sell purses, clothing, perfume, and MTV sitcoms to those who show an interest in her. I’m not telling you that you need money from a hotel franchise, a sex tape, or a dance. I’m telling you that you need to use the internet to your advantage and use it to grow interest in you or your artist. Allow your fans in. Allow them to know who you are. Give them your day to day struggles and success.
Okay….now I’m getting tired. I been up since 8am and its now 3am the next morning. If you are up here from face book then you know how little I sleep. So lets end the blog here, and I will give you my thoughts on the 360 deals tomorrow. Deal?

Today top 5 came to after a conversation with some random female that I met at the studio yesterday. She begged me not to blog about it but....its me Marv...you know I don't give a fiduck!!! So here it is, my top 5 of the week. These are the top 5 things a female could do that is a complete f-ing turn off!!!!

5) A MAJOR TURN OFF IS...females that hawk and spit cold (mucus). That is the most unlady like disgusting ish!!

4) A MAJOR TURN OFF IS...a female who farts. But....it depends. A fart can mean a lot. If you can fart around your companion, then it truly shows how close the two of you are. But that comes with time. Now if you fart on the first date then you just a nasty motherfu*ker!!

3) A MAJOR TURN OFF IS...a female that doesn't shave her arm pits. I mean....pit hairs...its....man that's just nasty. Bottom line!!

2) A MAJOR TURN OFF IS...a female with a bush. If your cuda snacks have not been shaved or at least had a trim, and been growing the same pubic hairs since you were thirteen!! That's ridiculous baby. You need either a razor, a barber, or a damn weed whacker!!!

She kicked her shoe at the police, and they proceeded to bang her head into the wall and beat her down as if she was a 30 yr old 250 lb grown man carrying a pistol. Now yes, she was wrong for kicking the shoe and needs to either learn or know to respect the law enforcement and the authority they have. However, beating it into her is not the answer. And again, what will happen? The city, will as always, wait for this to die down from the media and give these two officers a desk job for a few months and maybe lower their pay by 50 bucks. Wow!!! What a punishment!! I mean, its some people out here that actually got fed up with the police and reacted by doing something as small as using profanity and maybe slightly pushing the officers hand out the way. All those people got as a punishment was a traditional ass whipping by about 4 or 5 cops at once, charged with assault to a police officer, spent years of their life in prison and was tortured each day they were in their by the police. Luckily they weren't punished as bad as the officers who practice police brutality. I mean, how could a person continue to live if their punishment was a good paying desk job, and a spank on the hand. Like I said....WOW!!!....WHAT A FUCKING PUNISHMENT!!!!

OBAMA IS NOT OUR HOOK UP IN THE WHITE HOUSE

I saw an interview the other day that bothered me a bit which made me write this blog. Look before I even start I want to address Obama being in the white house. To have a black man as this country's president shows the progress of the United States. Decades ago a black man wasn't allowed to drink from the same water fountain as a white man, and look at how far we have come.
Oprah said that she didn't vote for Obama because he's black, but because he is brilliant. That should had been the reason that we all cast our votes. We should had voted for whoever it is we felt would had been the best fit to resolve the economic crisis this country is currently facing. Skin color should had not been an issue in this matter. For example, if O.J. Simpson would had ran for president would you had voted for him? Or if Charles Manson was the only white man running for president would you had voted for him? My point exactly.
Now back to the interview. The interview I saw was online with a lady stating, and I quote "we have a black man as president so we all about to be straight now". First of all Obama doesn't represent JUST BLACK PEOPLE nor does he represent JUST WHITE PEOPLE, instead he represents people as a whole. We shouldn't view our president as our hook up in the white house. What we should do is use his accomplishment as motivation for ourselves to ensure us that its nothing we can not achieve, black or white. Obama is our first black president not Jesus. There is no magic button that he is able to push that will make your life better. Instead he can provide opportunities for us that will increase our chances of success. However, it is your responsibility to take full advantage of those opportunities. So don't take instructions take initiative. Lets not just wait for change, but be part of it. Ya dig.

OLD SCHOOL GRIND VS NEW SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY

ASHER ROTH, CHARLES HAMILTION, MARV & CASH, B.O.B. ...these are just a few names to look out for. This is the new school. Today's topic is based simply on that "New School". Now its lots of older well known artist who state that hip hop is lost, not what it was, or dead even. When in all actuality its becoming better than it ever was. Unfortunately its lots of older artist who have grown accustom to the traditional way of doing things and are unable to adapt to the music industry's changes. We know now have the Internet which allows us to sell our music from home instead of the trunk of our cars. You can sell your product to kids in China without leaving the bedroom of your home. This eliminates a mass amount of overhead for the independent artist. Think about, 1000 compact disc and fliers cost you about $1000.00 at least. Where at the cost of creating a Jpeg, a compress zip file, and a myspace cost close to nothing and sells the same cd. There is also blogsites and online communities that allow you to communicate with thousands of consumers world wide to build your fan base. My point in saying this is because I want you to understand this is a new age....a digital age. If you don't adapt to it then you will be lost. Its not just because of the kids that the names I mention earlier are surviving this beast we call the music industry, its also the fact that they utilize the Internet in every way possible. The blogs, myspace, viral videos, it all allows them to communicate with the consumer on a more personal level. Over 60% of people do their shopping online. In a little while compact disc aren't going to exist. So what do you do when the consumer no longer buys your product from the device or source that you sell it by? Let me break it down for you, you can't sell 8 tracks in a cd store.....ya feel me. Does that make sense? Get with it or get lost. Now we all have respect for the older generation, you have to. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be here. So don't get this blog twisted its not a diss to the older generation. No, this is me using my knowledge to spread light on things. This is what I'm saying its a new way of grinding. I'm not saying its better, I'm saying that this new way is more compatible to the process consumer use to make purchases this day and time. What worked back in the day was good for back in the day. But the grind has evolved, the same as everything does. Therefore we need to follow the Asher Roth's, Hamilton's, Marv & Cash's, and etc. of this game.....because this is what works now.

Reports: Rihanna 'Identified as Victim' in Chris Brown Assault

Pop star Rihanna has been named as the alleged victim in the domestic violence investigation involving her boyfriend Chris Brown, according to Internet reports.
Brown, 19, turned himself into police on Sunday for making criminal threats after getting into a heated fight with a then-unidentified woman in a vehicle in Los Angeles earlier that day.
Police have so far refused to officially release a statement indicating the victim's identity, but new images and documents suggest Rihanna is at the center of the claims.
According to TMZ.com, crime reports indicate the victim's name is Robyn Fenty, Rihanna's birth name.
Brown was also photographed behind the wheel of a rented Lamborghini with Rihanna in the passenger seat after the pair attended music mogul Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Gala in Beverly Hills on Saturday, just hours before the alleged incident.
The police report states, "After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker."
Brown was released from custody after posting $50,000 bail on Sunday evening.
Both stars canceled their scheduled performances at Sunday's Grammy Awards.
The case is being presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, when additional charges may be filed.
Brown is due in court on March 5, and he has hired attorney Mark Geragos to fight his case. Geragos is best known for defending Winona Ryder after her 2001 arrest for shoplifting, and Michael Jackson during his child molestation trial.

Aight now this topic came about from me listening to a few songs on my ipod. Now I'm a hip hop head. I go back as far as KRS-1 to Kool Moe Dee to Run D.M.C. and up to Lil Wayne to Tip to Jay to Kanye, you name it. I'am hip hop ya dig. Its my culture, its who I am. The way I walk talk act and carry myself. So when its an issue with my culture I speak on it.
The issue I'm having is this, Gangster Rap. Do I have a problem with it? Of course I don't. Why don't I? Because the hip hop culture is based upon being true to yourself. Taking your life your situations, your environment and sharing it with the world. Giving those who listen to you a chance to hear who you are. Your pain, happiness, thoughts, emotions, everything. That's what hip hop is based upon. Introducing yourself and describing your life each time you put your hands on a mike. Each time you step into a booth. Each time that you load up pro tools. Each recording, each song, each verse is your life on paper. Now for me, that's where the issue of gangster rap starts ya dig.
Now I respect every artist out there doing there thing. I just feel like this culture needs to go back to the truth. And the truth is, if you just gross over a million or more last year from endorsements and albums and so fourth, then I don't want to hear you saying you struggling or robbing someone. I'm sorry. I know you want to connect with your listeners but honestly dude come on. You may not have forgot what it feels like to be in the house with no food or lights on, but its been a while since you had that situation. Now you can give us a story or two about your past or what you use to do and to me that's cool. But if you rich, I mean filthy rich....WHY ARE YOU STILL IN THE HOOD ROBBING MOTHER FUCKERS?! Just don't make sense to me.
Furthermore I know gangsters, real gangsters. Not you "studio only" hardcore cats. And that doesn't mean every rapper you hear talking about the streets doesn't back up what he says. That's not what I'm saying. So don't read this blog and jump in the wrong rappers face. YOU WILL GET YOUR HEAD KNOCKED OFF TRUST ME. I'm talking about these cats who keep screaming they robbing this person doing this doing that and every chain you got came from publishing money. I'm just saying man. You ain't in the hood no more. I know that I’m suppose to wait till Thursday, but I had to bring this to you. PLEASE GO SEE NOTORIOUS… It came out this Friday and I have already seen it three times. Don’t go and buy the bootleg, and if you do just make sure you support the movie first by seeing it on the big screen. This movie means a lot to the hip hop culture. It’s a must see. For those who remember the legacy of Notorious B.I.G. it really takes you back to the early and mid 90’s. It really gives you a first look of what hip hop once was. For those who don’t know or aren’t that familiar with the legacy, this is good hip hop education. I can’t stress how important it is to see this movie. The actors are great, the story is well put together, its perfect. Right now the older generation and the new generation of hip hop has a gap between the two and this bridges that gap together. Hip Hop needed this movie, and couldn’t had came at a better time. Okay so I’m out, I’ll leave you with this. PLEASE GO SEE NOTORIOUS!!!!!!!

"Weather or not"

Its raining today
And again I left my hat on the kitchen counter
Right next to my ipod
For the millionth time I'm not prepared for the unexpected
The rain is cold and somewhat stings
Each drop calmly walks from the tip of my thoughts to the souls of my loafers
But yet I look so ready
So expected of the unexpected
My collar is up
My hands are tucked deep in the pockets of my pea coat
My eyes are nearly closed to protect my pupils from being flooded
I strut through the sky's draining moment seeming to almost enjoy its drench
I want to lie to myself and say that the down pour doesn't effect me
But the puddles have begin to seep through my shoes
My socks have a slight dampness to them
Why did I wear these shoes
If I would had took 30 more seconds to check I could had grabbed my hat
I could had grabbed my umbrella
If I would had stop to think, then maybe…just maybe I would had put on thicker socks
But I….don't…stop…and…think
I rush, I make impulse decisions and grow confused and question why the consequences are so great
And if I can't understand the reasons then I find people to aim the tip of my fingers toward Point…blame
So its just me and this rain and this mask
Pretending as if I'm not upset from being soak
And the vomit of this gray cloud is all too familiar
The wetness…its outcome…its visit
Again I saw the storm inching towards me
But yet I fail to pay it any attention
Its raining today
And again I left my hat on the kitchen counter.

“The tragic murder of Oscar Grant”

You have bloods, crips, latin kings, and etc. All huge gangs known for their territorial beefs, violence, and members that range in the thousands. As violent as they may be, none is more notorious than the biggest gang in America….."THE POLICE DEPARTMENT". I'm not sure how many of you saw the execution, (or are just seeing the execution) that took place in an Oakland Subway by Bart Police, but come on enough is enough. How longer is it that these terrorist can hide behind badges!?!....And not every cop is bad, its just the majority. Even in the Bart shooting after it took place, the rest of the cops stepped back in shock as if they were saying "why did you shoot him". From Rodney King, to Jenna Six, to the Bart shooting, how much more will we take? As sad as it may be, I think that they will end up putting this cop, sorry I mean Terrorist, in some hick town and hope people forget what happen. Yes he was arrested, but will justice be serve? Keep in mind he was only arrested to keep people from looting. DON'T BE FOOLED!! I feel that the police are granted a certain amount of authority and I don't have a problem with that. However, when that authority is abused then the consequences of their actions should be greater than that of a normal citizen. The same way it is for us. If you assault someone or murder someone then YES you will be arrested and convicted. But if you do the same to a police officer the time is greater and the punishment is worse. The same rules should apply to police officers who abuse the authority that they have been granted, but this can't be done till we speak up and let our voices continue to be heard. In this situation the victim was on his back with his hands behind him and his face to the ground. It was said that the officer mistaken his pistol for a taser. If you can't tell the difference then you shouldn't be a cop!!! And if you were going for you taser, what was the reason for that? The victim was in custody waiting to be handcuff and the others were calmly on there knees waiting for the same. For what reason did this man need to be tasered, or even worse MURDERED? And if he was causing so much drama, then why are the people on the train so calm about the situation before the shooting took place. If he was a threat then someone would had stated that. Bottom line this Father, son, friend, was executed by the Police. This cop should be given the same treatment that the victim would had been given if he would had shot and murdered the cop. Think about that for a second. If the tables had been turned. If the cop was on the ground, hands behind his back and the victim shot and murdered him at that moment….what would his conviction be? Exactly, and that's the same conviction this Terrorist deserves…And some say "well he can't be put in a regular prison if he's found guilty of murder". Why not? If you assault an officer they put you not only in a jail surrounded by correctional officers, but you are amongst half the people that are friends with the cop you have assaulted. Nobody says, okay "he/she did harm to a cop. We can't put them in prison with everyone else". No! You go to jail and they look forward to putting you through hell each day that you are there. In my eyes the rules should not change. A cop's badge does not change them being a person just like the rest of us. I challenge anyone from the person reading this comment to the Jay-Z's, Al Sharptons, Obama, to Oprah…to pay close attention to the case and do their part to make sure justice has been served. Not only that we all need to voice our options to make sure this never repeats itself. Its 09, we put a black president in the white house....we can change the laws if we want to. And if we can't change them…then we can at least make them fair.
